Scatter Series Statement

The Scatter Series of paintings and clay works are all related to my ongoing interest in social issues. These themes began with drawings about the crisis in Darfur (2005, sadly now renewed), images about violent video games and what it was doing to our youth, to the use of drones and their effects. While many images relate to the effects of drones, the most recent works deal also with the very concept of “ Scatter” ; from the way we were scattered from one another during the pandemic, to the concept of the Jewish diaspora, to the effects of natural phenomena. And, in opposition to what is “natural”, I was then led to the use of AI (artificial intelligence) and software that creates images based on a written prompt. Like my first efforts in visually undermining violent video games, I wanted to show the UNreality of what the current technology is producing. For example, “dollies” come out looking like abstract or exaggerated versions of dolls. In a time of fake news, and questionable information on social media, I wanted to invite the viewer to question and think about what one sees.
